Top Three Tips To Writing and Distributing a Media Release

Having learned about media releases (also known as press releases, press statements and news releases) back in college in 2009, I knew it was time to sharpen up my skills when writing a recent media release speaking to Wolfgang’s part in re-imaging Hootsuite’s Vancouver office in conjunction with the Vancouver Mural Festival.

After researching a variety of sources and eventually writing my own media release, these are the tips I found most helpful:

1. Highlight With a Catchy, Factual Headline

I used Google’s parameters of a maximum of 60 characters when coming up with my headline. I also ensured that I capitalized on our globally acclaimed client’s name.

2. Keep It Succinct

There is no need to give every minute details within the release. As a detail oriented person, I found this hard not to do. I stuck to using a catchy headline, providing information about who, what, why, where and when, general Wolfgang information and contact. Brief is best for media releases. If the editor or reader wants more that’s where the contact information comes in handy.

3. Create a Robust Distribution List

I pulled together a list of local news outlets, considered my current and previous contact sat each, and wrote them each a personalized message speaking to the benefit to them of releasing the media piece. For me, it wasn’t about blasting the media release to get as many releases as possible, it was about building relationships, offering value and providing a great news story.
