Ideas are Worthless

Overheard some guy at a recent networking event lamenting to his buddy, ” I thought of online travel, years before Expedia existed” Pretty bold comment I thought,  “Yep, I had the business model dialled, I even had a list of Angel’s ready to go but . . .” The guy sounded smart and certainly could talk the e-commerce talk.

Here’s the thing, there’s stadiums full of people with brilliant idea’s but a precious few that can execute. The success of an idea is in its execution not formation. So, “online travel” guy, too bad you didn’t execute. We have learned this the hard way at Wolfgang.

In years past we spent far too long massaging an idea instead of getting it done. Lot’s of opportunities have past us by because we got stuck arguing its merits the boardroom.

Now, when someones “light bulb” goes off ,we test the idea against our values, hash out the big picture details and if it feels right, we go for it. Yes, we make mistakes, but we learn and we are a much stronger company for it.

Details are noise, they are distracting. Top firms, see the big picture and execute the idea.
