D&D News: Evidence Puts Earliest Paint-Making at 100,000 Years Ago

Mankind’s association with paint goes back farther than previously believed, based on evidence found in South Africa.

Archaeologists have reported the discovery of a 100,000-year-old “workshop” in South Africa where early modern humans mixed a kind of paint, using iron-oxide powder, or ocher. This prehistoric pigment was apparently blended with fat from mammal-bone marrow, which served as a binder.
