Hurray for Higher Income Taxes and Program Cuts!

The Liberals roll out and eventually referendum on the HST will go down as the most spectacular political blunder in B.C. history.  The HST debacle cost Gordon Campbell his job; it will probably be the undoing of Cristy Clark and it may loose the Liberals the next election (shudder to think that the NDP could regain power)

My favorite was the referendum ballot itself. Vague wording, convoluted questions, five ballots, three envelopes, multiple colors, could they have made the process more confusing?

And here we are today, having to pay back almost two billion to the Feds, spending hundreds of millions on government bureaucracy and forcing businesses to spend millions converting back to PST.

BC escaped the full brunt of the recession because of government stimulus programs and the Olympics. The timing and success of the Olympics was fortuitous but the infrastructure programs (Gateway, Canada Line and Sea to Sky) were well planned. Those projects kept and are keeping thousands employed.

The HST was going to pay for that infrastructure. That’s gone now so bring on the cuts to health care and education and increased income taxes. And if there are two things B.C.’s residents love its program cuts and taxes, right?
